If you need anything associated with fishing and camping Bushcamp Surplus Store in Kununurra has it.  Owners Todd and Sue Petherick believe in old fashioned customer service. Their shop has a relaxed country atmosphere and it’s loaded with everything imaginable for camping, fishing, work and leisure.

Todd, a 4th generation Kimberley local, believes that friendly customer service is an important part of their business.

We treat people in the shop how we would like to be treated, we greet everyone and show them around, whether we know your name and face and even if we don’t we treat you as if we do.

Their purpose is to provide a valued service and supply people with quality stock better than what the chain stores provide, and with fantastic variety.  Their prices are also comparable with online and chain stores.

We are very aware of what is online – If we don’t compete with online shopping we would go bust so we keep our prices comparable with the chain stores whether they be on the East or West coast. For example our Engel fridges are the same price as in Perth

Families love shopping here because there is something for everyone. Todd describes the business as the adults toy store and jokes that they purchased the business to fund his fishing and camping habit. Don’t we all just envy that!

Bushcamp Surplus Store also has a wide range of work wear and safety boots, plus a variety of Go Pro’s, fishing Tackle, Knives and Akubra Hats. There is also a wide range of kids camping clothes and swimming rashies.

So what keeps Todd and Sue in a small family business in the East Kimberley?

Todd is a Helicopter Engineer/Commercial Pilot whose witnessed the beauty of the region from the air many times over. He’s flown over many parts of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Papua New Guineau but his favourite destination is still the East Kimberley.

In this region you can go for an adventure with the family – there is an adventure for everybody – it really is the best place for work and play. Here you can do it all – waterskiing, fishing, camping, four wheel driving and swimming. There are so many places where you can have fresh water and salt water in the one place, it’s very unique.

Todd’s great grandparents were pioneers in the region and his great grandfather worked at the  Meatworks that served the cattle industry in Wyndham in the early 1900’s.  His grandparents, Sam and Maggie Lilly, also contributed greatly to the development of the East Kimberley in the mid 1900’s, Owners of 2 cattle stations and the 6 Mile Hotel.

Sue, originally from NSW’s, came to Kununurra in the mid 90’s to visit her dad who was working on the construction of the Hydro Power Station at Lake Argyle. At the age of 22, her flight to the East Kimberley was the first time Sue had been on a plane.  Growing up on a 45 acre pastoral property south of Canberra was a very different experience to Kununurra – in both climate and lifestyle – however the town felt like home from the moment she landed.

Kununurra made me feel comfortable & relaxed, everyone was friendly. What I love about it is that in 10 minutes you are in the bush, and its got so much water here, I love the water here. Its one of the best playgrounds possible. When you look around and see what’s available on your lap, it’s all so very close.

Their future plan is to expand the business both in product range and variety and move into a bigger store. The mind boggles with what else they could include as they seem to have it all covered, however the Petherick’s are pioneers and if anyone can create a thriving business in this beautiful wilderness it’s them.

In the month of August when you spend $100 or more at the Kununurra Bushcamp Surplus Store you go in the draw to win a swag!   The winner will be announced on the 31st of August.  There’s also a sale this month on Columbia clothing where you will receive $10 off all Columbia clothes in store.
