Dam To Dam Dinghy Race 2016
View the thrills of the 2016 Dam to Dam Dinghy Race and hear from race veterans and those beginners keen to just “give it a go”. This is a 55km race that is just good fun and Australia’s hidden gem. A race down the Ord River from the Lake Argyle Dam wall to the Kununurra Ski Beach near the Diversion Dam.
The Dam to Dam Dinghy Race is both fun and an adrenalin rush. This year competitors came from Perth, Darwin and South Australia to compete against locals in a fast and furious race down the Ord River, arguably one of Australia’s most scenic river systems.
The Kununurra Water Ski Club has been organising this event for 36 years. Former Club President Mark Coventry sees the Dam to Dam Dinghy Race is not just for those who seek out high speed and an adrenalin rush, it’s also a fun event that gives visitors and locals the opportunity to be immersed in the beauty of the Ord River.
The Ord River is amazing, there are very few events which include this majestic river
The club invites a large range of boats to enter and is inviting dinghy clubs from across Australia to come and participate in the 2017 Dam to Dam Dinghy race. The event is also part of the award winning Festival – the Ord Valley Muster which kick starts the tourist season in Kununurra, awarded the Best Regional Event at the 2015 Australian Tourism Awards.
So get your dinghy into gear and grease up your outboard and join in. The race is always a good laugh and although taken seriously by the competitors, it really is an event for novice racers as well as pros. With a handicap system in place anyone has the chance to win. There is also a modified class giving competitors who seek a little more from their boats a chance to race together increasing competitor numbers and drawing the field closer in the handicapped race. Dinghy’s with a standard 15hp right through to 30hp can race together as well as the 30hp modified class.
We’ve aligned our rules with other dinghy racing clubs around Australia to grow the event and get some interstate rivalry. The traditional race encourages any skipper to grab their boat and have a go and with a handicap to give any boat a chance of winning. Now we also have a category for modified 30hp so we have the Renmark Riverland Dinghy Club from SA competing which is great and we hope to get other clubs interested as well.
For those more laid back there is the ever popular champagne cruise that starts at the Lake Agyle Dam wall at the start line and follows the race down the river to the Ski Beach.
If you are not the competitive type then come along as a spectator and enjoy a fun and affordable day out at the ski beach relaxing, including children activities, food stalls and a bar.
The Kununurra ski club would like to thank the generous community for donating all the amazing prizes and the sponsors for making the event happen. .
The Kununurra Community just keeps on giving, in such a small town with so many events held all year round the support from community businesses and groups is always overwhelming.
